The Neighbour's Dog

It was past midnight when Ramesh woke up, his body was burning with fever. For the last three days, he was running a high fever, though he was continuously taking medicine but there was no improvement.

He went to the kitchen and filled a glass of water, it was when he was coming back to his bedroom he heard the noise, that same irritating noise of a Barking Dog. He couldn’t believe his ears.

Ramesh always hated Dogs, and when two months back a family of Punjabi’s shifted to the flat below his flat he was disheartened – the Punjabi family had a Dog.

He couldn’t sleep well for almost a month as the Dog would start barking since early morning and Ramesh would spend rest of his night tossing and turning in his bed. He tried talking to Punjabi family but they felt offended when he addressed the pet as ‘Dog’. The situation remained the same. It was then Ramesh decided to get rid of the Dog and bought rat poison the next day.

Ramesh came back to the bedroom from the kitchen, he thought that he might be hallucinating, he tried to sleep but the noise of a barking Dog continued vibrating in his ears. He found something odd when he heard the noise carefully and realized that it was not coming from the balcony of his neighbors, it was coming from his own balcony. Ramesh was shivering with fever and fear, his heart was beating fast and he was sweating profusely.

Ramesh got shock of his life when Dog came to his bedroom and started barking at him, he woke up his wife who was sleeping next to her and was oblivious to the situation.
‘Sweta see this Dog of Punjabi’s has entered our bedroom’ Ramesh pointed in the direction of Dog standing next to the wardrobe.

Sweta looked around the room.

‘Ramesh there is no one here, someone poisoned that Dog and it had died three days back’, she comforted him.

Ramesh looked at Sweta and closed his eyes, he heard the Dog bark again.

Sometimes.... somewhere!

I had just crossed the road and headed for the bookstore which was just a few meters away when I saw a blind man on the opposite side of the road. The man was asking for help to cross the road. As there was no one nearby so I went to the opposite side of the road and helped the man in crossing the road.

I said bye to the man and was headed for the book store when I heard a loud noise. An accident or a tire burst, and within seconds a fully loaded truck jumped from the flyover and landed exactly over the book store. If I would not have helped the blind man I would have been inside the book store at that moment.

I was stunned to see what had just happened and turned back to thank the blind man. What I saw sent shivers down my spine.

The old man was still standing on the opposite side of the road exactly at the same place and asking for help to cross the road.

My mind went numb.
